About Sierra Wireless

Pioneers of mobile broadband and IoT connectivity

Sierra Wireless was founded in 1993 in Vancouver, Canada, and became one of the defining companies in the cellular data modem industry. Their PCMCIA and ExpressCard mobile broadband modules powered the first wave of laptop connectivity in the early 2000s. The company pivoted to IoT and M2M routing hardware with the AirLink range, which became widely adopted in public safety, utilities, and transportation sectors globally.

Company background

  • Founded 1993, Vancouver, Canada
  • Pioneered cellular data modems for laptops
  • AirLink M2M router range launched early 2000s
  • Acquired by Semtech Corporation in 2023
  • Now operating as part of Semtech IoT division
  • Strong legacy in public safety and utilities sectors
  • ALEOS firmware platform used across entire AirLink range

Sierra Wireless in UK M2M deployments

Sierra Wireless AirLink routers have a substantial installed base in UK utilities, rail, and public safety communications. The RV55 in particular is widely deployed in environments requiring high reliability and dual SIM failover. Their devices are specified by integrators who need proven long-term firmware support and enterprise-grade management via the AirVantage cloud platform.

The ALEOS firmware powering all current AirLink devices includes built-in SMTP email support for event notifications, which works directly with IoTMail.

Configuration guide

Setting up IoTMail on a Sierra Wireless AirLink router

ALEOS firmware includes an Email Notification feature under the Events configuration. The following steps apply to RV55, RV50X, and LX40 running ALEOS 4.x or later.

Before you start: Log in to portal.iotmail.co.uk and copy your device SMTP credentials. The SMTP host is smtp.iotmail.co.uk, port 587 with STARTTLS.
1
Access ACEmanager
Browse to 192.168.13.31 (default AirLink IP) or the device management IP. Log in to ACEmanager with admin credentials.
2
Navigate to Events Reporting > Email
In ACEmanager, select Events Reporting from the left menu, then the Email tab.
3
Configure the SMTP server
Enter the IoTMail SMTP settings in the server configuration fields.

Apply and test
Click Apply to save settings, then use the test function to verify delivery. Check the IoTMail portal send log to confirm the message was received and relayed.
Use cases

Sierra Wireless and IoTMail in the field

Public safety vehicle connectivity

MP70 routers in police and ambulance vehicles send email when connectivity is lost or when a vehicle enters or leaves a defined zone. Control room operators get immediate notification without checking fleet management dashboards.

Utilities remote site monitoring

RV55 routers at unmanned substations and pumping stations send email alerts on comms failure or power events. The dual SIM failover combined with IoTMail email relay means alerts continue even when the primary network is the problem.

Rail trackside equipment

AirLink devices in trackside enclosures send maintenance alerts by email. IoTMail provides the delivery reliability and audit trail that operations teams need for equipment compliance documentation.
