About Milesight

Machine vision and IoT sensing from Xiamen

Milesight was founded in 2011 in Xiamen, China, as a machine vision and video surveillance company. The business expanded into IoT sensor hardware in 2017, launching one of the most comprehensive ranges of LoRaWAN-connected environmental sensors on the market. Milesight products are sold through a global distribution network and are particularly prominent in UK smart building, agriculture, and utilities deployments.

Company background

  • Founded 2011, Xiamen, China
  • Expanded into IoT sensing hardware 2017
  • Product range spans cameras, sensors, and gateways
  • Strong LoRaWAN portfolio - one of the widest available
  • ISO 9001 and CE certified hardware
  • Active LoRa Alliance and Wi-SUN Alliance member
  • Sold in 100+ countries via distribution partners

Milesight in UK IoT deployments

Milesight found strong adoption in the UK through their UG65 and UG67 LoRaWAN gateways, which offer cellular backhaul in a ruggedised enclosure at a price point well below competitors. Their AM and EM sensor series cover temperature, humidity, CO2, occupancy, air quality, and water detection - making them a complete solution for building monitoring.

The cellular gateway range (UC and UR series) supports SMTP email for alarm notifications, which makes them directly compatible with IoTMail without any custom firmware.

Configuration guide

Setting up IoTMail on a Milesight gateway

Milesight cellular gateways and routers include an alarm notification system that supports SMTP email. The following steps apply to the UG65, UG67, UC300, and UR35 running current firmware.

Before you start: Log in to portal.iotmail.co.uk and copy the SMTP credentials for your device. The SMTP host is smtp.iotmail.co.uk, port 587 with STARTTLS.
1
Access the gateway web interface
Browse to 192.168.1.1 or the gateway's management IP. Log in as admin.
2
Navigate to Maintenance > Email Alarm
On UG series gateways find this under Maintenance. On UR series routers it is under Applications then Email.
3
Enable email notifications and enter SMTP settings
Toggle email alarms on and fill in the server details.
SMTP SettingsMilesight gateway - Email Alarm
SMTP server: smtp.iotmail.co.uk
SMTP port: 587
Encryption: TLS / STARTTLS
Auth method: LOGIN
Username: yourhandle+devicetag # from IoTMail portal
Password: your-device-password # from IoTMail portal
Sender: yourhandle+devicetag@iotmail.co.uk
Recipient: alerts@yourdomain.com
4
Configure alarm triggers
Select which events trigger an email. For LoRaWAN gateways: connection loss, packet threshold breaches, uplink failures. For cellular routers: WAN disconnect, reboot, signal strength threshold.
5
Send a test email
Use the Test Email button. Check your inbox and the IoTMail portal send log to confirm delivery.
LoRaWAN sensor alerts via gateway: LoRaWAN end-devices like the AM307 sensor do not send email directly - they transmit data to a gateway, which can be configured to send email when sensor readings cross a threshold. Configure sensor thresholds in the gateway's sensor management section after adding devices to the network.
Use cases

What Milesight customers use IoTMail for

Building environmental monitoring

AM307 sensors monitoring office CO2 and temperature. Email alert when CO2 exceeds 1000ppm or temperature drops below set point. Facilities team receives immediate notification without checking a dashboard.

Water leak detection

WS series leak sensors in server rooms, comms cupboards, and plant rooms. Email sent the moment water is detected. Critical for preventing equipment damage in unmanned locations.

LoRaWAN network monitoring

UG65 gateway sends email if the LoRaWAN network drops below minimum device connectivity thresholds. Operations team alerted before end-users notice sensor data going stale.
